UMINA reaches 'A Competition Final' at Gosford Grade 9 Gala Day!

Parents & Supporters were up early on Sunday 29/7 at Gosford to watch the Umina Under 9A boys do their thing.  We were up against some very good teams - 13 x A Teams from all parts of the Coast, and one from North Sydney.  The Gold Hairspray was applied, and the Red Frogs were consumed early........Let them loose one spectator said !!!  We started with two very close and exciting 0-0 draws against Gosford (A) and then East Gosford (A).  We then met Woy Woy (A) needing to win as we were falling behind on goal difference, and the boys delivered with a great 2-0 victory.  Now it was down to the last group game against Ourimbah (B) knowing a win would seal top spot in our group.  We came through again and scored a 1-0 victory.

Our Semi Final was not against Kincumber, Terrigal or North Sydney much to our surprise !  They had all fallen by the wayside.......We were against Wyoming (B) who were on fire beating some of the big guns.  The boys started the Semi Final well and put Wyoming under pressure all game with plenty of chances.  We came out very convincing winners 1-0.  Our sixth game for the day was the Final against Killarney (A), and we knew we had a great chance to win after drawing twice with Killarney in comp games this year.  Adding to this, our defence was in great shape having no goals scored against us in the 5 previous games !  We started the Final well, and went so close, just missing several chances in the first half.  We were the better side in the second as well, but we got caught pressing forward looking for the winner, and Killarney got us on the break with a good cross, and a mis-kick that wrong footed our goaly Alex and it trickled in.  We kept trying hard peppering their goal with more shots and attack after attack, but time ran out and we went down 0-1.  As a coach, this kind of feeling is what makes you want to do the job year after year........You made us all proud today boys with the effort, determination and sportsmanship you showed.  Your Parents should be very proud of you !  Well done lads !

THE MIGHTY U/6 S1 2'S STRIKE AGAIN

The mighty U/6 S1 2’s have done it again. This time taking out the Terrigal Gala Day held on Sunday 26th August. Competing against 20 sides including sides from Sydney and all across the Coast, the 6 2’s won 6 games straight to take out the title.

The first game was a hard fought struggle against Leichhardt with Umina finally prevailing 3-1. We then defeated Terrigal Taipans 7-0, Terrigal Dragons 6-0 and Killarney Vale 6-0 to progress through to the Semi Finals. The Semi Final was a tough contest with Umina defeating Normanhurst 1-0.In the final we took on Southern Ettalong, a side we have had close games with all year. The Umina boys rose to the occasion and played what I would consider our best game of the year to run out 3-1 winners.

Our side was made up of.

No.2: Lachlan “The Bulldozer” McLeod – Playing by the motto if you can’t go around them go through them Lachlan didn’t stop all day. A strong tackling and running display.

No 3; Taylor “The Wall” Hope – On the field Taylor didn’t stop trying, but it was in goal were he excelled. A great goalkeeping display.

No 4: Alejandro “Running Man” Murdoch – Al didn’t stop running all day. Pushing forward and creating headaches for the oppositions defence.

No 5: Thomas “On Fire “ Marsh – told me after every game that he was on fire and he was. Great attacking runs from the back and a couple of first class goals.

No 6: Dylan “The Wizard” Pardey – Controlled the midfield with easy. Oppositions had no answers to his dazzling footwork. Created chances for himself and the rest of the team all day. Played a great Grand Final scoring a couple of Goals.

No 7: Isaak “The Rock” Giunta – A stroke of genius by the coach to move Isaac back to defence. His tackling was first class saving the team on more than one occasion

No 8: Brandon “Non Sop” Nikora – A bundle of energy, whether up front or in defence he didn’t stop chasing the ball all day. Scored some vital goals early in the rounds.

No 9: Jack” The Freak” Driscoll. -  Another one of our attacking midfielders. Jacks ball control and his booming right foot have opposition goalkeepers shacking in their boots. His shoots from outside the area have some spectators comparing him to a guy called Beckham.

Once again the Kids have asked me to thank their coach Jack Guinta, our sponsor: Phil’s Car Repairs, and all their parents for their support throughout the year.

Robert McLeod - Manager

W14C GRAND FINAL WINNERS

Our little princesses of the paddocks, complete with Tiaras

After a weeks delay due to rain we finally arrived at Killarney Vale on Grand Final Day. Expectations were high and nerves were being subdued with all of the preparations before the game. So with their hair sprayed yellow, team coloured ribbons in their hair and the war paint on their faces we took the field. Our opponent, Ourimbah, had been the toughest we had faced all year and with four previous matches all exceedingly close we anticipated the same.

As notorious slow starters it was a pleasant surprise to dominate play early on, the girls controlled the ball and moved it around with skill and accurate passing. As a result one pass found Kelsea just outside the box and a tad off centre with all of the defence standing off waiting. This allowed her to lean back and finesse the ball over everyone’s head and drop in for our first goal. This sent the supporters into a frenzy of cheering and banner waving. Play continued in a similar vein only this time the pass found Jade D. on the corner of the box and a solid kick sent the ball into the far top corner of the goal for a two – nil lead and more wild antics from the supporters on the hill.

Our plan was to start with solid defence and weather and initial storm from Ourimbah then send in Tammy and Kate to fire up our attack but Ourimbah seemed to have the same idea, unfortunate for them they let two goals in early. The remainder of the half was fairly evenly poised with both teams making attacking raids but solid defence keeping both goals safe. Then late in the half a through ball put Ourimbah on the attack and with some space to work, fired a rocket across goal and despite Taylah’s effort to get a finger tip to the ball it wasn’t enough to push it wide and Ourimbah had their first.

The second half started much the same as the first had ended with both teams making attacking raids but the defence at both ends held firm. Annie had a couple of individual runs from near half way but was unable to convert. It wasn’t until Kelsea laid the ball back from the box to Tammy who was a mile out but launched the ball into the heavens where it plummeted back to earth and with the sun in her eyes Ourimbah’s goalie would have been hard pressed to see the ball let alone stop it. Three – one up but not yet home.

Ourimbah continued to press hard and had several chances but were continually shut down by Courtney and Laura at the back. The continued pressure finally found a crack and Ourimbah had their second and could smell victory. Our girls stood tall and defended hard until the final whistle. It was a great team effort with Alison our captain, Maddy, Saara, Zoey, Jayne, Sheridan, Rhiannon and Jade S. contributing to the team’s success.

Both teams should be congratulated on the way they played the game with an off-side for each being the only infringements the entire game. Ourimbah played their heart out and never gave up pressing us the entire match, if we hadn’t scored two early goals then the result may have gone the other way.

CONGRATULATIONS GIRLS and enjoy the moment. - Final score Umina 3 def Ourimbah 2

Woman's All Age 4 Grand Final Match report

Umina played Woy Woy, for the 6th time this season, in the grand final at Mangrove Mountains. Woy Woy have been tough competition all season with them having the best of us over the previous five encounters.  We went in to the grand final missing Lina to a pre booked holiday, so had to rearrange our line-up. Heidi's leg was still a little doubtful, so Tina slotted in to Heidi's usual position to partner Sandra in the heart of defence.

The game kicked off and as was expected a tight encounter ensued. Mel, having sustained an injury at training started to struggle and was replaced after 15 minutes. She bravely had another ten minutes in the second half but was unable to continue. while her field time was brief it did mean that some of the other players were able to get an extra 10 minute breather in what was shaping up to be a tough and hot encounter. Beth who was also limping came off for a quick break, but was determined to continue on and had probably her best game off the season.  Woy Woy had the best chance in the first half, a long range bomb that Jenny Gunn eventually saved after a nervous first touch. Other than that most of the rest of the half was us attacking then Woy Woy attacking, with neither side gaining any dominance.  Leah and Tanya started off in the centre of the park and had a high work rate, but when Renee needed a breather, Leah was moved to an unfamiliar right back position and there she stayed for the rest of the match. Along with Debbie and Amanda, our back four were dealing with most everything that Woy Woy were throwing at us. it is a real tribute to our defense that we conceded only a half dozen actual goals in regular season.

In to the second half and things were much the same. Amanda's calves were acting up so that meant we were down to the one sub. Upfront, our Skipper Jody, and Peta French were chasing everything and letting the Woy Woy backs know that they had to be on their toes. When we got the chance we played to our strengths and that being Simone down the left flank, meaning that the Woy Woy women were having to do a lot of defending.

About fifteen minutes in, Woy Woy mounted an attack from the back. When they got to the midfield they were disposed of the ball by Tanya who managed to get the ball to Heidi who sent the ball forward straight over the top of the defence leaving Peta French to run on to the ball and charge forward.  Peta brought the ball down well, tore past the defence and then calmly slotted the ball past the keeper to give Umina a 1-0 lead.  This spurred Woy Woy to attack us more and more and many of the Woy Woy attacks were broken down by some very determined defence, in particular Tina Leah and Sandra, with Jody dropping back to cover.  Everyone was back and defending and there were a couple of goal mouth clearances. Nerves were starting to dominate the closer to the end of the match and Woy Woy had a final chance where they got through and had a good shot on goal, and it was very calmly saved by Jenny, in complete contrast to us on the side line.

That then bought the final whistle and Umina came out on top 1-0. At the presentation, the Woy Woy coach, who is a top bloke, said some very nice things about our team and the spirit of the game and how it was played, and certainly our women had said that even though they were all tough encounters, Woy Woy were a great bunch to play.  It was the tough game that we thought it would be and Kenny and I are very proud of how the women have conducted themselves on the pitch and to their training off the pitch. We went and had a couple of celebration drinks at French manor and thanks to Andrew and Peta for their hospitality. Also thanks to the partners and families who made the trip to the mountains, and have supported the woman through the season. You guys are tops. Player of the day was a tough one, and we couldn't pick anyone. All the women stepped up and they left nothing on the pitch. I imagine that Monday morning had some very sore bodies dragging themselves out of bed.

Thanks for putting up with us girls.  Kenny and Antony

One nil up in the Grand Final after a great season, top effort

WOY WOY GRADE 6 GALA DAY

Our Grade 6/1 teams shone at the Woy Woy G6 Gala Day held on Sunday 1st July.   They won the Grand Final against SEU 2 Nil. A match report will be coming soon.  Well done to a great little team, who only had 6 players and no subs.  They had a 13-1 win over Woy Woy yesterday

Paul Daniel Memorial Grade 6 Gala Day - Sunday 1st July 2007

On Sunday the Umina Under 6 S1 2's competed in the Paul Daniel Memorial Gala Day at Woy Woy.  After defeating Woy Woy 2's 7-0, Kincumber 5's 11-1 and East Gosford 4-0 we won our group and progressed through to the Semi Finals. In the Semi Final we played Berkeley Vale 1. We were victorious in this game 7-1.  In the Grand Final we played Southern Ettalong and after a hard fought game we took out the competition with a 2 nil victory.  This is the first time an Umina team has won this Gala Day since its inception in 1985.  It was an outstanding effort by all the boys. We played the whole competition with no reserves and were without or regular coach, Jack Guinta.  I would like to make special mention of our defence and goalkeepers who only allowed 2 goals in an hour of football.  Congratulations to all the boys on their play and behaviour throughout the day. These guys played an hour of football with no replacements in bitterly cold conditions without one complaint or argument. They are a credit to themselves, their parents and the club.  I would also like to thank all the parents and supporters for all their help and support during the day.  I would also like to thank our team sponsor, Phil’s Auto Repairs, for their continual support.  "Acting coach" Robert McLeod

MATCH REPORT - UMINA G6S1 UMINA 2 - GALA DAY HILLS HAWKES

On Sunday 20th May the Umina S1 U/6 2's took part in the Hills Hawks Gala Day at Galston in Sydney. The under 6's division had sixteen teams entered. Umina defeated Hills Hawks 4 nil in the first game, then demolished Greystanes 12 nil in game two and went on to complete a clean sweep of their round robin games with a 6 nil defeat Hills Hawks Kookaburras. With a three nil record in the round robin we went through to the semi finals where we met West Pennant Hills. In a brutal match Umina was victorious 2-1.In the 3 pm final we met Kellyville Colts. Unfortunately by this time the 4 previous games as well as the 6am rise had started to take its toll. Umina fought hard but went down 4-1.  Even though we played with seven players all day, leaving us with only one reserve per match, each player put in 100% effect in every game.

Both the coach Jack Guinta and manager Robert McLeod were extremely proud of the effort by all the boys. They represented their club with good sportsmanship and respect on the field and good behaviour off it. Jack and Robert would also like to take this opportunity to thank all the parents and supporters who travelled down and cheered for our boys throughout the day

The Chris Payne Story..........so far.
Chris Payne has been selected as the Inaugural Lucas Neill Scholarship recipient.  He will fly out to England  on 22 September to trial at English Premier League Clubs Blackburn Rovers, Liverpool, Newcastle United and Belgian club Chaleroi.  Chris was chosen by Manly United Head Coach Phil Moss, Lucas' father Ed, former Blackburn Rover and Socceroo player Robbie Slater and Sydney FC player Steve Corica.  Chris has been supported by Nike with the company supplying him with boots, tracksuits and training apparel.  Chris played for Umina United Soccer Club from under 5's beginning when he was just 3 years old until he won the A grade competition in the 10's and then moved on to play at representative level for the Central Coast.  Chris has also represented the Central Coast every year since under 11's at the state titles which are held each October.  Chris moved on to play for Manly United in the under 14's and is currently part of the premier youth league side which finished 2nd in the competition, he scored 22 goals for his side this season and another 7 while helping out the under 18's.

UPDATE

Chris has returned from the United Kingdom after training and trailing with English Premier League Team 'Blackburn Rovers' for 3 weeks.  He played in several games for both under 16's and 18's and scored a goal against Bolton Wanderers.  Chris was initially supposed to stay with Blackburn for a week and move on to Liverpool and Newcastle but Blackburn were so impressed with him they kept him there for an extra two weeks.  He is returning to Blackburn in January, 2007 with the hope of a contract offer.  He spent some time with Lucas Neill and was able to attend two matches while he was there which he said was just amazing watching Lucas play.

UPDATE

Chris flies back to the UK on Saturday 27th January for a month in which time he will again be going to Blackburn and they will decide in that time if they want to offer him a contract.  He will be playing games against Liverpool, Wolverhampton Wanderers, Manchester City and Bolton

From Chris - 16 March, 2007
I began playing for Umina United when I was 3 years of age until U/10's when my team won the 10A competition, I then went to the Central Coast and played there until U14's when I moved to Manly United then when in the U16's I was chosen as the inaugural recipient of the Lucas Neill scholarship to go and trial with Blackburn Rovers in the UK.

I went to Blackburn at the end of September 2006 and I was invited back to have another trial. I left on 27 January.

We train 6 times a week, our training schedule is:

Monday - 1 training session

Tuesday - 2 training sessions

Wednesday - Day Off

Thursday - 2 training sessions

Friday - 1 training session

Saturday - game day

I have also been doing extra training sessions in the gym.  At the end of the day your legs feel like they are going to drop off but after a week or two you get used to it and your desire to become a professional footballer helps to get you through this.

I live in at Blackburn's academy which is like a motel set up and they have a chef employed to cook all meals for all the academy boys through to the first team.

I put a lot of hard work in training before I left and I couldn't of done all the hard work without Lee Fullwood our clubs 2006 1st grade coach.  He put me through some very hard sessions including massive hill runs but hopefully it will all be worthwhile in the long run.  Lee also allowed me to train with the 1st grade squad during 2006 which I really appreciate as it gave me an extra training session each week.  All the hard work you do yourself can help you to become a better footballer.

I have been playing games in the U16's and U18's and have played striker, centre midfield and right midfield.  I have played against Bolton where we lost 4-1, Crewe 3-3 draw, England school boys 1-0 win, Wolverhampton Wanderers 1-4 loss and Middlesbrough 3-1 win and I scored 2 of the goals and set the other goal up and we played another game which I can't remember the team we played we won 5-4 and I scored 2 goals in that game.

I have been ball boy at all but 1 of Blackburn Rovers games that they have played since I have been here which includes Premiership, UEFA Cup and FA cup games with the most memorable game being the FA Cup replay against Arsenal which Blackburn scored in the last 3 minutes to win the game and progress to the quarter finals.

I will be ball boy again this Saturday when Blackburn play West Ham United, which I am reall looking forward to as I will get to see Lucas play.

I would like to say a massive thanks to Umina United Football club for everything and special thank you to Lee Fullwood and the 2006 1st grade squad for all their help with the extra training throughout the year.

Chris Payne
